Our History
The company was founded as BTI Millman Ltd in March, 2010, by Dun Machoka, Steve Maina and Fred Onyango at the Chiromo Campus of the The University of Nairobi while pursuing our Computer Science and Electrical Engineering degrees. Our mission was to apply the knowledge we were learning to build bespoke Web, Mobile, SMS and USSD apps to solve business challenges for the African market.
Driven by a culture of collaboration and a commitment to social impact, we became one of the first African companies to join the Fair Trade Software Foundation in 2011. This led to a strategic partnership with the Netherlands-based Competa IT BV. Following years of successful collaboration, Competa acquired a stake in the business in 2017, resulting in our rebranding as Competa Millman.
Since then, the company has continued to scale, addressing the complex technical requirements of a global clientele. In 2019, the Millman Group of Companies was established to productize our enterprise software solutions and intellectual properties, specifically serving the banking, insurance, medical, and logistics sectors.

Steve Maina
Chief Executive Officer
Stephen holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi and is a Professional Scrum Master (PSM I), bringing together strong technical expertise with agile leadership and product management. His background spans software architecture, digital transformation, enterprise systems, mobile technologies, cloud platforms, telecommunications, and emerging technologies, including blockchain and artificial intelligence.
Driven by the belief that Africa’s greatest resource is its people, Stephen continues to champion technologies that bridge digital divides, strengthen institutions, empower creators and entrepreneurs, and build inclusive digital ecosystems capable of creating lasting social and economic impact across the continent.
Steve Maina
Chief Executive Officer
Stephen Maina is a technology entrepreneur, computer scientist, and digital innovation strategist with over 15 years of experience building transformative technology platforms across Africa. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer, he provides the strategic vision behind the company’s mission to harness technology, media, and connectivity to solve complex social and economic challenges while creating sustainable opportunities for young people.
Stephen has successfully led the conception, design, and commercialization of digital solutions spanning financial services, healthcare, agriculture, civic engagement, telecommunications, and digital media. His strength lies in identifying emerging opportunities, translating bold ideas into scalable products, and building multidisciplinary teams capable of delivering impactful solutions at scale.
He co-founded Competa Millman, a technology company that has delivered enterprise software for leading organizations including Absa Bank Kenya, Medsource Group, the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), FIDA Kenya, the International Republican Institute (IRI), and numerous development partners across Africa. Under his leadership, the company has developed mission-critical ERP systems, customer relationship management platforms, mobile data collection solutions, public participation systems, and cloud-based enterprise applications serving thousands of users.
Stephen is also the visionary behind Imara.TV, an innovative youth-powered digital entertainment ecosystem that combines storytelling, technology, and economic empowerment to educate communities while enabling young creators to earn sustainable incomes. He additionally co-founded Jibambe.net, a community-focused Internet Service Provider working to expand affordable broadband access to underserved urban and rural communities.
Beyond entrepreneurship, Stephen is deeply committed to nurturing Africa’s next generation of technology leaders. Through mentorship initiatives and software engineering training programs, he has helped equip hundreds of young developers with practical technical and entrepreneurial skills, fostering innovation and employment opportunities within the region’s digital economy.
Fred Onyango
Chief Technology Officer
Fred Onyango is an accomplished technology executive and software architect with over 13 years of experience designing and delivering enterprise-grade software solutions across fintech, healthcare, logistics, supply chain, and digital transformation projects. As Chief Technology Officer, he leads the company’s technology strategy, software engineering, cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and innovation roadmap.
Fred combines deep technical expertise with strong business acumen, enabling him to translate complex organisational challenges into scalable digital solutions. His experience spans full-stack software engineering, cloud-native application development, DevOps, systems integration, AI-driven technologies, and agile product delivery.
Before assuming his current leadership role, Fred served as a Senior Software Engineer and consultant for leading organisations including Stord (USA), Absa Bank Kenya, and Medsource Kenya, where he successfully delivered mission-critical platforms that improved operational efficiency, automated complex business processes, and enhanced customer experiences. His work has included enterprise ERP systems, Salesforce solutions, API integrations, cloud migrations, and large-scale workflow automation.
As Co-founder and Head of Engineering at Competa Millman, Fred has played a central role in building high-performing engineering teams, mentoring young software developers, and fostering a culture of continuous innovation. He has trained and guided hundreds of aspiring engineers while championing Agile software development practices that have significantly improved product quality and delivery speed.
Fred holds a Master of Science in Computational Intelligence and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Nairobi. He is also an AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, reflecting his commitment to modern cloud technologies and scalable digital infrastructure. His technical expertise spans JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Node.js, Python, PHP, cloud platforms including AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, containerization with Docker and Kubernetes, infrastructure automation, CI/CD pipelines, database architecture, and enterprise systems integration.
